On Friday, May 25, 2012, the pope, Benedict XVI (#266), accepted the resignation of 75-year old Nigerian Cardinal Priest Anthony Olubunmi Okogie [dob: June 16, 1936] as the Archbishop of Lagos pursuant of the nominal 75-year limit specified in Canon 401 § 1 of the 1983 Code for diocesan Archbishops. He was installed as the Archbishop just under 39 years ago, the day after his 37th birthday [i.e., 1973]. He was created a cardinal priest in October 2003.
With this retirement the number of retired cardinals among the cardinal electors ticked up to 26%.
Cardinal Okogie is the 4th cardinal to retire this year. This is the 14th change to the College so far this year, way below that of last year.

On Thursday, May 17, 2012, Czech Cardinal Priest Miloslav Vlk [dob: May 17, 1932] turned 80, ceasing to be a cardinal elector. He became the Archbishop of Prague and the Primate of Bohemia in March 1991. He retired from Archdiocese in March 2010 aged 77 — two years past the nominal 75-year limit specified in Canon 401 § 1 of the 1983 Code for diocesan Archbishops. He was created a cardinal priest in November 1994. He was born to a single mother and has openly talked about his birth out of wedlock — his mother having refused an abortion.
Cardinal Vlk is the 5th cardinal to age-out this year. This is the 13th change to the College so far this year.

On Thursday,May 10, 2012, the pope finally accepted the resignation of 80-year old South Korean, Cardinal Priest Nicholas Cheong Jin-Suk [dob: Dec. 7, 1931] as the Archbishop of Seoul; diocesan Archbishops per Canon 401 § 1 of the 1983 Code required to submit their resignation to the pope upon turning 75. This is one of the longer delays in such a resignation being accepted. He was the 3rd oldest active Cardinal Archbishop; 80-year old Lucian Mureşan of Romania and Patriarch Delly of Iraq being older. [Andrew O: informed me that there is a third active Archbishop older than Cheong: Hovhannes Tcholakian, the Armenian Catholic Archbishop of Istanbul. But he's not a Cardinal.]
Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk’s retirement does not change the demographics of the College, just the ‘employment’ status of the various Cardinals.
Cardinal Cheong Jin-Suk had been Archbishop of Seoul since May 1998; being created in March 2006. He became a non-elector on December 11, 2011.
He is the 3rd cardinal to retire this year. This is the first change to the College in 30 days and the 12th so far this year. [Also refer to this post.]

On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, on the 62nd anniversary of his priestly ordination, 89-year old Puertorriqueño, Cardinal Priest Luis Aponte Martínez [dob: Aug. 4, 1922] died in Puerto Rico of cardiovascular and kidney complications.
He was the Metropolitan of San Juan [P.R.] for 34years, from November 1964 to March 1999; retiring at 76 per the nominal 75-year retirement age specified in Canon 401 for Canon 401 § 1 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law for diocesan bishops. In 1966 he formed the Episcopal Conference of Puerto Rico becoming his first president – a post he held until 1982.
He was created a Cardinal Priest by Paul VI (#263) in March 1973. Prior to his death he was one of 4 living cardinals created by Paul VI — not counting Cardinal Ratzinger, the current pope. Now we are down to 3 Paul VI cardinals. He was not the youngest or the oldest of the Paul VI’s cardinals; Cardinal Sales created in 1969 is 91, Baum created in in 1976 is 85. Arns, now 90, was also created in 1973. Benedict XVI was created at Paul’s last consistory in 1977.
He was the only cardinal from Puerto Rico. So Puerto Rico no longer has any Cardinals.
His death frees up the title of S. Maria della Provvidenza a Monteverde. Roman vacancies thus get bumped up to 10 as on today, April 10, 2012.
He is the 4th cardinal to die this year; the 2nd in three days. At this time last year we had only had one death — and that was on April Fool’s Day. See this post for the latest statistics on cardinal deaths.

On Saturday, April 7, 2012, Easter Saturday, 81-year old Syrian Oriental Rites Patriarch, Cardinal Bishop Ignace Moussa I Daoud [dob: Sept. 18, 1930] died in Rome of cardiovascular complications.
In October 1998, the Syrian Catholic Patriarchal Synod elected him the 134th patriarch of Antioch of the Syrians [Lebanon]. He was appointed the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in November 2000. He then resigned the patriarchate in January 2001 and moved to Rome.
He was created a Oriental Rites Cardinal Bishop the next month. He relinquished his Prefecture, age 76, in June 2007 per the nominal 75-year retirement age for curial cardinals specified in Canon 354 of the 1983 Code. He turned 80 in 2010 and ceased to be a cardinal elector.
He was the only cardinal from Syria. So Syria no longer has any Cardinals.
His death does not free up a Roman property since he was a Cardinal Patriarch; Cardinal Patriarchs not being assigned Roman properties and instead retaining their Patriarch title. Roman vacancies thus remain at 9 as on March 9, 2012.

On March 20, 2012, the pope, Beneidtc XVI (#266) accepted the retirement of Canadian Cardinal Priest Jean-Claude Turcotte [dob: June 26, 1936], though he was still but 75, per the nominal 75-year retirement age specified in Canon 401 § 1 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law for diocesan bishops. Jean-Claude Turcotte, created a cardinal priest in November 1994, was the Metropolitan of Montréal since March 1990. Turcotte, who carries the title ‘Cardinal Priest of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Canadian Martyrs‘ will, alas, best be remembered for his various stances on abortion. In 2007 he presided over the funeral of the Canadian Supreme Court judge who removed all abortion-related restrictions in Canada. A year later he renounced his ‘Order of Canada’ honor, awarded to him in 1996, when the same honor was awarded to a prominent Pro-Choice doctor. Yet, in 2009, he was realistic enough to acknowledge: ‘I can understand that in certain cases, there is almost no other choice than to practice (abortion)‘. Amen.
[I missed this retirement announcement on March 20! I was out much of that day and probably overlooked it in my hurry. A reader pointed this out to me. THANKS.]
This retirement ONLY changes the ‘occupation’ statistics of the College, a previous Archbishop now becoming ‘emeritus’. Jean-Claude Turcotte, 76 in June, will continue as a cardinal elector for another 4 years.
He is the 2nd cardinal to retire this year. Still low compared to last year. See this post.
