Embattled Cardinal Bevilacqua.

On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 88 year old [dob: June 17, 1923] U.S. Cardinal Priest Anthony Joseph Bevilacqua, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia, died in his sleep, at his residence, on the outskirts of Philly, in the grounds of the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. He had been the Archbishop of Philadelphia from February 1988 to July 2003 — when he reigned, aged 80, well after the nominal 75-year retirement age. He has been heavily implicated in covering up clerical child sexual abuse — one of them, one of his long-term aides. He, though suffering from dementia, was still facing potential court appearances for his cover up of the crimes when he died.

He is the first cardinal to die in 2012. The previous death, also in Pennsylvania, was that of Cardinal Deacon John Patrick Foley on December 11, 2011. To have a cardinal die in January is not that unusual. Last year was extremely atypical in that the first death was on April Fool’s Day. So this is the first change to the size of the College in 2012 — 18 days ahead of the cardinal creating consistory that will create 22 new cardinals which will bump the size up to 213 barring other deaths.

The College is down to 191, but the electors continue at 107.
