On Friday, May 25, 2012, the pope, Benedict XVI (#266), accepted the resignation of 75-year old Nigerian Cardinal Priest Anthony Olubunmi Okogie [dob: June 16, 1936] as the Archbishop of Lagos pursuant of the nominal 75-year limit specified in Canon 401 § 1 of the 1983 Code for diocesan Archbishops. He was installed as the Archbishop just under 39 years ago, the day after his 37th birthday [i.e., 1973]. He was created a cardinal priest in October 2003.
With this retirement the number of retired cardinals among the cardinal electors ticked up to 26%.
Cardinal Okogie is the 4th cardinal to retire this year. This is the 14th change to the College so far this year, way below that of last year.
The College continues at 210 (still a record), with the electors at 122 — still 2 too many.
As of February May 25, 2012, there are 122 cardinal electors with 88 no longer able to participate in a conclave.
[The electors represent 58% of cardinals.]
The College as of April 10, 2012 has been at 210.
