On Thursday, June 14, 2012, Swiss Cardinal Priest Henri Schwery [dob:June 14, 1932], turned 80 and ceased to be an elector. He was the Bishop of Sion [Switzerland] from September 1977 to April 1, 1995, when aged 63 (for reasons I cannot find or fathom) he retired. He was created in June 1991. Following his retirement he was sent as the special envoy of the pope to a couple of events in France in the ensuing two years.

Switzerland is now down to one cardinal elector, the youthful, 2010-created Kurt Koch.

Cardinal Schwery is the 6th cardinal to age-out in 2012.

This is the 17th change to the College so far this year; just one down from the changes to this point last year.

Sion, Switzerland, Cardinal Schwery old seat.

The College continues at 209 (still a record), with the electors at 121 — still 1 too many.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of June 14, 2012, there are 122 cardinal electors with 88 no longer able to participate in a conclave.
[The electors represent 58% of cardinals.]
