Late on Monday, July 9, 2012, 91-year old Brazilian Cardinal Priest Eugênio de Araújo Sales [dob:Nov. 8, 1920] Archbishop Emeritus of São Sebastiaõ de Rio de Janeiro died of a heart attack at his home in Rio. He, created by Paul VI (#263) in April 1969, was the doyen of the College in terms of tenure, i.e., 43 years. He was also the most senior of the Cardinal Priests. He attended all four sessions of Vatican II and participated in both of the 1978 conclaves. He turned 80 in 2000 and thus ceased to be an elector.

Cardinal Sales is the 6th cardinal to die in 2012, Cardinal Rodolfo Quezada Toruño on June 4 having been the last.

This is the 20th change to the College so far this year. After slow, sluggish start we have drawn level with the changes last year; the changes this year occurring, on average, every 9.8 days compared to 10.0 for last year. At this time last year we had only had 4 deaths.

The College is down to 208 (still a record), with the electors at 121 — still 1 too many.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of July 10, there are 121 cardinal electors with 87 no longer able to participate in a conclave.
[The electors represent 58% of cardinals.]
