First update since Oct. 26, 2015. After a 46 day hiatus two cardinals died a day apart.

So a LOT of information IF you like to study this type of data. Enjoy.

9 cardinals have died so far in 2015 — up to October 7, 2015.

Here are the pertinent details. Click to ENLARGE.

2015cdeathsOct7

The average duration between deaths have been 23.5 days. The typical average for this is 44.6 days. The 4 deaths in April was atypical. That 44% belonged to a religious order is also slightly out of the norm.

10 cardinals died in both 2014 & 2013, while the number was 9 for both 2012 & 2011. It was 6 in 2010. So the 2015 number is close to to ‘high water mark’.

Keeping track of cardinal deaths is in no way morbid. It is something one has to do IF one is to keep tabs on the College of Cardinals. Only three things alter the fundamental parameters of the College: creations, 80-year aging outs and deaths.

I used to maintain this type of chart — until I stopped doing so once Pope Francis was elected in 2013. Click to ENLARGE. I plan to go back to doing this.

In 2011 I did a fair amount of research and analysis into cardinal deaths. Here are some examples. Go to “Popes and Papacy” and do a search on “cardinal deaths” for more. Here are some of the charts from those posts. Click to ENLARGE. My goal is to resurrect and update these charts. The good news is that I have the Excel spreadsheet.

For those who like me do not like eBooks.

This, as you would demand, has my trademark tight formatting and the well laid out tables.

Given the printing costs this is the cheapest that I can offer it at.

The March 12 to 13, 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis (#267), on the 5th ballot, was my ‘the next pope‘ election — the conclave that was the subject of both my ‘The Next Pope‘ books (published in 2010 and 2011). Much of my papal blogging, starting in 2008, also was about the ‘next pope’ and hence the ‘next conclave’ — which happened to be this one in March.

So it would have been incongruous if I did not update my ‘conclave’ book to include the 2013 conclave. Given that I already had most of the information already in my head or documented somewhere on a blog post, it wasn’t like I needed to do much research. So I decided to do an update, refresh and augment the ‘Last 9 Conclave‘ book, which I published 3 days after Benedict XVI’s (#266) announcement that he was resigning, as soon as we got back from vacation. So that is another project off the ‘to do’ list.

Ξ Documented the 2013 conclave
and updated the conclave book.

This book, I will, luck permitting and technology willing, bring out as a cheap paperback. So, that is another new project.
