Post November 24, 2012 Cardinal Creating Consistory; College At 211. Electors At 120. Non-Electors 91.

by Anura GurugeAnura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011..

On Saturday, November 24, 2012, the day before the Feast of Christ the King, Pope Benedict XVI (#266), in his 5th cardinal creating consistory (the second on November 24), created 6 new cardinals; all under the age of 80.

The 6 new cardinals were: James Michael Harvey (U.S.A), Béchara Boutros Raï, O.M.M. (Lebanon), Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal (India), John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan (Nigeria), Rubén Salazar Gómez (Colombia) & Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle (Philippines).

Click here for all their details.

Two assumptions until mid-Saturday:
1/ Assumed that James Harvey will be created a Cardinal Deacon.
2/ No other changes to the existing College prior to or during consistory.

The electors will be at their full legal complement of 120 for 14 days when the next cardinal will turn 80 reducing the number down to 119.

The 211 size of the College, though large, is not a record. Following the prior cardinal creating consistory in February 2012 the College was up to 213, the all time high water mark.

The College is at 211, with the electors at 120 — the full legal complement.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of November 24, 2012, there are 120 cardinal electors with 91 no longer able to participate in a conclave.
[The electors represent 57% of cardinals.]

Italian Cardinal Deacon Renato Raffaele Martino Turns 80; Becomes Non-Elector; College Continues At 205. Electors Down To 114. Non-Electors 91.

Cardinal Deacon Renato Raffaele Martino, now a non-elector.

by Anura GurugeAnura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011..

On Friday, November 23, 2012, the Friday before the Feast of Christ the King (once again to be commemorated this year with a cardinal creating consistory on its eve), Italian Cardinal Deacon, Renato Raffaele Martino turned 80 and thus ceased to be an elector.

He is the 12th cardinal to age out this year, his aging out providing the 6th vacancy for the forthcoming November 24, 2012 cardinal creating consistory. Only 10 cardinals aged out last year. But, we had more retirements last year. Consequently, the average age at which changes to the College have occurred this year, i.e., 80.9 years, is a full year higher than it was for 2011.

Today’s aging out was the first change to the College in 22 days. The last change was on Nov. 1, 2012 when Cardinal Bishop Arinze turned 80. At this time last year we had had two more change than this year. This years ‘days between changes’ has gone up to 11.5 days, cf. 10 for 2011.

This is the 5th cardinal deacon related change this year, the last on Sept. 21 when Cardinal Baldelli died, aged 77.

Martino was a career curialist, having entered the Holy See diplomatic service in 1962, when only 29 years old. He became a titular archbishop in September 1980, aged 47. He was the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the U.N. He became the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (Justitia et Pax) in October 2002; a month ahead of his 70th birthday. He held that post until October 2009, then close to 77 retiring per the nominal ’75 year’ age limit for curial cardinals.

The College continues at 205 (still ahead of the 203 mark set at the November 2010 consistory), with the electors at 114 — giving us 6 elector vacancies for a fleeting ‘1 day’ grace period prior to the November 24, 2012 cardinal creating consistory.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of November 23, 2012, there are 114 cardinal electors with 91 no longer able to participate in a conclave.

Nigerian Cardinal Bishop Francis Arinze Turns 80; Becomes Non-Elector; College Continues At 205. Electors Down To 115. Non-Electors 90.

Cardinal Bishop Francis Arinze.

by Anura GurugeAnura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011..

On Thursday, November 1, 2012, All Saints Day, Nigerian Cardinal Bishop, Francis Arinze turned 80 and thus ceased to be an elector. He was considered by the popular media, particularly so in the British-influenced English media, as a leading papbile in 2005, though the indications are that he got few, if any, votes at the conclave. Some have continued to promote him, contrary to much evidence that would contradict the possibility of the next pope being non-white, as a papbile. That he has now turned 80 might finally, thank God, put an end to this pipe dream because most are willing to contend that the electors might be a tad hesitant to elect a pope who is beyond 80 (a non-white to boot) — the only possible exception to this over-80 ‘rule’ being Lord Bertone, in a couple of year.

He is the 11th cardinal to age out this year, another aging out on November 23 to provide the 6 vacancies for the forthcoming November 24, 2012 cardinal creating consistory. Only 10 cardinals aged out last year. But, we had more retirements last year. Consequently, the average age at which changes to the College have occurred this year, i.e., 80.9 years, is a full year higher than it was for 2011.

Today’s aging out was the first change to the College in 41 days. That is unusual though we had a 49-day hiatus last year. At this time last year we had had one more change than this year. This years ‘days between changes’ has gone up to 11.1 days, cf. 10 for 2011.

We now only have two Cardinal Bishop electors. Not a problem. We actually don’t need any for a conclave. The senior most Cardinal Priest can legitimately deputize without any problems.

Arinze became a titular bishop in July 1965, aged 32. He was an Archbishop 23 months later. Became a curialist in May 1985 and was created a Cardinal Deacon that same month. Opted to become a Cardinal Priest, per jus optionis, in January 1996. Promoted to being a Cardinal Bishop in April 25, 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI (#266) six days after becoming pope!

Nigeria is down to one elector but will have another created on November 24th.

The last cardinal to age out was Cardinal Priest Pedro Rubiano Sáenz 49 days ago.

The College continues at 205 (still ahead of the 203 mark set at the November 2010 consistory), with the electors at 115 — giving us 5 elector vacancies.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of November 1, 2012, there are 115 cardinal electors with 90 no longer able to participate in a conclave.

Cardinal Deacon Fortunato Baldelli, dead at 77.

by Anura GurugeAnura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011..

On Friday, September 21, 2012, Italian Cardinal Deacon Fortunato Baldelli [dob: Aug. 6, 1935] died unexpectedly, age 77. His retirement, age 76, as the Major Penitentiary had been accepted by the pope on January 5, 2012 — the first change to the demographics of the College of Cardinals in 2012. He, a career curialist and nuncio, had been the Major Penitentiary since June 2, 2009. He was created at the last cardinal creating consistory on November 20, 2010.

He is the 9th cardinal and the 1st cardinal elector to die this year. The total number of cardinal deaths in 2011 was 9, and that included 2 other electors. So the deaths for 2012 could go up there been another 101 days left. Having two electors die in a year is quite rare. No electors died in either 2010 or 2009. The average number of cardinal deaths in a year, as of 2000, is 7.2. So we are above average.

The last cardinal death was 21 days ago, that of Cardinal Maria Martini, S.J.

This is the 27th change to the College so far this year, the prior change 8 days ago. We are now ahead of last year to this point, changes this year also occurring, on average, once every 10 days — the same as last year.

The College is down to 205 (still ahead of the 203 mark set at the November 2010 consistory), with the electors at 116 — giving us 4 elector vacancies.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of September 21, 2012, there are 116 cardinal electors with 89 no longer able to participate in a conclave.

Colombian Cardinal Priest Pedro Rubiano Sáenz Turns 80; Becomes Non-Elector; College Continues At 206. Electors Down To 117. Non-Electors 89.

Cardinal Pedro Rubiano Sáenz now a non-elector.

by Anura GurugeAnura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011..

On Friday, September 13, 2012, Colombian Cardinal Priest Pedro Rubiano Sáenz [dob: Sept. 13, 1932]turned 80 and thus ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was the Archbishop of Bogotá from December 1994 to July 2010 when he retired well into his 77th year, two years above the nominal retirement age per Canon 401 § 1 of the 1984 Code. He was created a Cardinal Priest in February 2001 and participated in the 2005 conclave.

With his aging out, Colombia, nominally 75% Catholic (that being the official religion), will no longer have a cardinal elector; just two non-electors.

He is the 10th cardinal to turn 80 in 2012 — that being the total ‘turned 80’ count for last year, and we have still another three months ago. The next scheduled to turn 80 is Paddy Power’s perennial papabile, the Nigerian Francis Arinze, on November 1, 2012. The prior cardinal to turn 80 was English Cardinal Priest Cormac Murphy-O’Connor on August 23, 2012.

This is the 26th change to the College so far this year, the prior change 13 days ago. We are now one change ahead of last year to this point, changes this year occurring on average every 10.1 days — a tad slower than last year.

Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, S.J., R.I.P.

On Friday, August 31, 2012, 85-year old Italian Cardinal Priest Carlo Maria Martini, S.J. [dob: Fe. 15, 1927], supposedly the #3 vote getter at the 2005 conclave, died, in his sleep, at a Jesuit institute, viz. the Aloisianum (College), in Gallarate [north western Italy]. He was a noted liberal and the original author, in 2006, of Benedict XVI’s (#266) ‘condoms in certain situations is the lesser of two evils‘!

He was the Archbishop of Milano from January 1980 to July 2002 when he retired 4 months after turning 75, the nominal retirement age per Canon 401 § 1 of the 1984 Code — the expedited retirement probably having to do with him being a liberal in John Paul II’s (#265) College. He was created a cardinal priest in February 1983 and participated in the 2005 conclave as a liberal papabile, a Jesuit to boot (there never having been a S.J. pope).

He is the 8th cardinal to die in 2012, the prior, also a Jesuit, having been Paul Shan Kuo-his of Taiwan 9 days ago. 10 deaths a year is about par for the College of late.

This is the 25th change to the College so far this year, the prior change a week ago, exactly. We are now one change ahead of last year to this point, changes this year occurring on average every 10 days — the same as last year.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor

On Friday, August 24, 2012, English Cardinal Priest Cormac Murphy-O’Connor turned 80 and thus ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was the Archbishop of Westminster from February 2000 until April 2009 when he retired 1.6 years after turning 75, the nominal retirement age per Canon 401 § 1 of the 1984 Code. He was created a cardinal priest in February 2001 and participated in the 2005 conclave.

He is currently the only cardinal from England; Scotland having the 74-year old, Cardinal O’Brien — with the pace maker. So England per se no longer has a cardinal elector, and unlikely to get one any time soon.

He is the 9th cardinal to age out in 2012; a total of 10 aging out in 2011.

This is the 24th change to the College so far this year, the prior change within the last 48 hours. We have now caught up with last year.

The incomparable, majestic Westminster, the cradle of democracy.

The College continues at 207 (still a record), with the electors down to 118 — giving us 2 elector vacancies.

Cardinal Shan Kuo-hsi, S.J.

On Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 88-year old Taiwanese Cardinal Priest Paul Shan Kuo-hsi, S.J. [dob: December 3, 1923] Bishop Emeritus of Kaohsiung, Taiwan died. He was appointed Bishop of Hwalien, Taiwan in 1979. He transferred to Kaohsiung and held that see until his retirement in January 2006 aged 82 — 75 the nominal retirement age per Canon 401 § 1 of the 1984 Code. He was created a cardinal priest in February 1998. Since he turned 80 in 2003 he did not get to participate in the 2005 conclave.

He was the only cardinal, ever, from Taiwan.

With his death the number of cardinals in religious orders falls to 34, not counting the two Opus Dei.

Cardinal Shan Kuo-hsi is the 7th cardinal to die in 2012, Cardinal Eugênio de Araújo Sales on July 9 being the prior.

This is the 23rd change to the College so far this year. We have once again slowed down compared to last year, albeit just by one, changes this year now taking place every 10.5 days compared to 10.0 for last year.

On Friday, August 10, 2012, Filipino Cardinal Gaudencio (“Dency”) Borbon Rosales [dob: August 10, 1932] as the Archbishop Emeritus of Manila, Philippines, turned 80 and thus ceased to an elector. He had retired from Manila on October 13, 2011, aged 79 — the nominal retirement age being 75. He was replaced by 54-year old Luis Antonio Tagle a cardinalabili. Cardinal Rosales was created in March 2006.

With his aging out, the Philippines, the 3rd most populous Catholic country, will cease to have any cardinal electors! See this companion post.

Cardinal Roales is the 8th cardinal to turn 80 in 2012, Cardinal Stafford just 15 days earlier been the last.

This is the 22nd change to the College so far this year. We have once again slowed down compared to last year, albeit just by one, changes this year now taking place every 10.4 days compared to 10.0 for last year.

Manila from JUST a few days ago! This adds further insult to injury.

The College continues at 208 (still a record), with the electors now at 119 — finally with a vacancy post the February 18, 2012 cardinal creating consistory.

The Next Pope 2011 book by Anura GurugeAs of August 10, 2012, there are 119 cardinal electors with 89 no longer able to participate in a conclave.
[The electors represent 57% of cardinals.]
