Occurred to me the other day (while hiking in Acadia National Park) that I did not know the ‘demarcation line’ when it came to the last consistory with as yet ‘active’ cardinals. What I was trying to work out was which consistory was the last in terms of:

1/ All created cardinals now over 80, or

2/ All created cardinals now deceased.

The 2 consistories that meet these criteria are those of 1988 and 1977. But we should also make a note of that of 1976 — Paul VI’s last.

Of the 24 cardinals created at the 1988 consistory 18 are dead and the other 6 are now over 80. So there will be no representation from this consistory if there were to be a conclave anytime soon.

From ‘Catholic Hierarchy’ with thanks.

All 21 of the cardinals created at the 1976 consistory are now dead, U.S.  William Wakefield Baum, ex-Archbishop of Washington, the last to do so — his passing happening (quite recently) on July 23, 2015.

Then there is the 1977 consistory — the next one after that of 1976. It was a small consistory at which only 4 cardinals were created — BUT one of them was ex-Pope, Ratzinger. Of the four he is the only one still alive. The last of the other three, Bernardin Gantin, of Benin, one time Dean of the College of Cardinals, having passed away in May 2008.

So in terms of ‘unrepresented’ the two consistories are 1976 and 1988.

The March 12 to 13, 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis (#267), on the 5th ballot, was my ‘the next pope‘ election — the conclave that was the subject of both my ‘The Next Pope‘ books (published in 2010 and 2011). Much of my papal blogging, starting in 2008, also was about the ‘next pope’ and hence the ‘next conclave’ — which happened to be this one in March.

So it would have been incongruous if I did not update my ‘conclave’ book to include the 2013 conclave. Given that I already had most of the information already in my head or documented somewhere on a blog post, it wasn’t like I needed to do much research. So I decided to do an update, refresh and augment the ‘Last 9 Conclave‘ book, which I published 3 days after Benedict XVI’s (#266) announcement that he was resigning, as soon as we got back from vacation. So that is another project off the ‘to do’ list.

Ξ Documented the 2013 conclave
and updated the conclave book.

This book, I will, luck permitting and technology willing, bring out as a cheap paperback. So, that is another new project.

Yes, the 2nd Kindle book in 4 days, but this is the last. In this ebook I included 15 FAQs: the ones most asked of me. Also provide a list of all the ‘officers’ for the 2013 conclave plus their duties. Yes, some of the content is borrowed from ‘The Next Pope 2011‘. As with ‘The Last 9 Conclaves: 1903 to 2005’ the express intent of this ebook is to provide electronic content for those that was reference matter on their Smart Phones or Pads — given that the ‘The Next Pope 2011‘ is not available electronically, and will not be available electronically. I priced it to coincide with the correct sequence number of the new pope: #267; hence U.S. $2.67.

While, of course, it was opportunistic, my real motives was to make SOME of the contents of ‘The Next Pope 2011‘ available as an eBook and do so at a cheap price. I will never publish ‘The Next Pope 2011’ as an ebook. It is a large format book. So what I am trying to do is to provide some of its content, complete and self-contained, as Kindle ebooks. This, for those familiar with the book, is ‘Appendix C’ in its entirety, with a stripped down ‘Appendix A’. I wrote ‘Appendix C’ in 2009 and spent a whole year writing it — which by my standards is a long time. People have enjoyed that Appendix. So, here it is as a cheap eBook. My wife, who helped format it, is giving me grief for not pricing it higher.

The standard, consistent format used to describe all 9 conclaves.

So What Will Ex-Pope Ratzinger Do? I Think That Will Have To Be His Name. He Can’t Be Benedict XVI Once He Is Emeritus.

Kind of funny, in a sad way, to papal historians like me. Another well known pope to resign: not once BUT twice. Benedict ‘3-term’ IX (#146, #148 & #151). This will blacken the name ‘Benedict’ for a long time.

So what do you call an ex-pope, other than ‘loser’? He can’t carry on being Benedict XVI. That was his papal name. He has to Ratzinger. But, what Ratzinger. Pope Emeritus Ratzinger?

Where will he live. Rome? Italy? Germany? Elba? Or will he move to the U.S.?

Yes, I am a cynic. Benedict IX resigned for the first time BECAUSE he, around 25 at the time, wanted to get married. Will Benedict finally marry Ingrid Stampa?

What will the ex-Pope do during the conclave? Will he attend the inauguration?

Why did he spurn God’s will? When 6 year olds get killed everybody says ‘God’s Will’, they are going home to God. So what about the pope. Didn’t God just want to ask him to come home? This to me violates God’s will.

College of Cardinals: The Statistics In Tabular Form; 6 Page PDF With Demographics By Vatican ‘Continents’

To help us keep on top of any fluctuations in papabili dynamics and enable us to speculate on potential conclave politics, I try to maintain up to-date statistical and demographic data on this blog.

I now also have the relevant stats in tabular form — as a 6-page, Adboe Acrobat PDF [which was 111KB as of the July 15 update]. I find that this tabular format permits easier assimilation of the data and trends. My goal is to keep on adding more rows (and thus pages) to this table as time permits.

I have now added pertinent demographics (with percentages per category) per Vatican ‘continent’ — in addition to doing it in terms of West Europe, East Europe, USA and Canada. Having it at this granularity provides some interesting insights. The College, in total, has 27 cardinal deacons — they are, however, all from Europe and the USA [with 4 from Eastern Europe]. The only non-European suburbicarian see Cardinal Bishop is from Africa, viz. Cardinal Francis Arinze. Of the 32 cardinals belonging to religious orders, 34% are from the Americas with just 2 from Africa. The 4 living cardinals created by Paul VI [#263] are all from the Americas. So that is the level of detail you can get from this table.

Just a small sample from the table

I have a fairly large Excel spreadsheet that I now use to generate these numbers. I have resorted to using formulas such as this so that the counting is done automatically for me.
=(COUNTIFS($E$2:$E$180,”<80″,$P$2:$P$180,”*”,$N$2:$N$180,”E”)+COUNTIFS($E$2:$E$180,”<80″,$P$2:$P$180,”*”,$N$2:$N$180,”EE”))

[Yes, I used to be a programmer, an Assembler and a microcode programmer at that in the 1970s for IBM.]

If needed I can go further with this data. As you will see, I have done demographics for the USA and Canada. I can do it for any country that I want. Just need to change the country code. Yes, there is a slight chance that a number or two may be wrong because the formula is in error. I plan to spend an hour or so tonight going through each formula by hand. Let me know what you think.

Click here for the latest table.

Enjoy.
