On Tuesday, June 26, 2012, the Vatican announced that the pope, Benedict XVI (#266), had accepted the resignation of Italian Cardinal Priest Ennio Antonelli [dob:Nov. 18, 1936] as the President, Pontifical Council for the Family per Canon 354 of the 1983 Code that requires cardinal heads of curial dicasteries to tender their retirement to the pope when they turn 75. Cardinal Antonelli 75th birthday was only 221 days ago. He was the 2nd youngest retirement pending curial cardinal. While it is perfectly kosher for the pope to accept his retirement at this stage, it does seems somewhat incongruous given that most cardinals stay in post for at least 18 months past their 75th birthday — unless they are very ill or have displeased the pope. Read this post.
Cardinal Antonelli is the 6th cardinal to retire in 2012. He continues to be an elector. So this retirement only changes the employment picture of the College — one more ’emeritus’ joining the ranks.
This is the 18th change to the College so far this year. After slow, sluggish start we have drawn level with the changes last year; the changes this year occurring, on average, every 10.2 days compared to 10.0 for last year.
The College continues at 209 (still a record), with the electors at 121 — still 1 too many.
As of June 13, 2012, there are 121 cardinal electors with 88 no longer able to participate in a conclave.
[The electors represent 57% of cardinals.]
The College as of June 5, 2012 is at 209.
